I've decided Mother's Day is better than your own birthday for a couple of reasons...
1. Not everyone gets to celebrate Mother's Day. Only Mother's do, which rocks 'cause we TOTALLY deserve it. Actually, we deserve an entire week.
2. Unlike your birthday, everyone knows that it's Mother's Day. I went to school for finals and some of the students wished me a happy Mother's Day. It was a little wierd, but made me feel important.
3. There are reminders everywhere that Mother's Day is coming up, unlike your birthday. Therefore, your husband CAN NOT forget.
4. You can skip all activities and not look crazy. When you want to lay around in your PJ's for your birthday, people look at you like you just said you want to burn yourself with matches. On Mother's Day however, you can request a PJ day and it's granted with no questions asked.
This year is actually my second Mother's Day. I found out I was pregnant two days before Mother's Day last year. I was sick and wanted some sort of recognition! I don't even remember if Matt actually got me a gift, but I did declare it a PJ day (after a few Mother's Day visits) and sluffed church.
I had a couple of coversations about Mother's Day while taking Holynd in for her four month check-up.
One mother in the waiting room asked how old Holynd was and I said, "Four Months".
(Now, I've had a few incidents where I'm asked what grade I'm in, who I live with, etc etc. Apparently I look like a teenage mom. So I was a little nervous when she started talking to me. I remember checking to make sure I was wearing my wedding ring.)
She asked if I was excited for my first OFFICIAL Mother's Day and I told her I was. She asked if I was asking for anything specific. I said, "Yes, actually. I want some take-out sushi, a hot LONG shower and a nap. I actually told my husband to leave the house so that he couldn't be tempted to come and wake me up." She looked at me for a minute, grinned and said "You're a genius."
:)
I left the Dr's office feeling pretty good about myself. (It's not everyday you get called a genius!) I got on the elevator and this gentleman grinned and asked about Holynd.
Before I got off the elevator the man said, "She's gorgeous and it's all your fault." And after already being called a genius I said, "I KNOW, ISN'T IT GREAT!?"
Whoops! I think a simple 'Thank You' would've been better... But whatever!
Happy Mother's Day everyone!
